Thoughts and inspiration for the winter months coming up: Never deny sunshine that is trying to flood through your windows. Open up the blinds and welcome it in. Especially on cold days. Fill your life with color and texture. Laugh.

The other day.

Exert from my traveling journal:

Ripping out the “my so called scarf”.
How could I mess up this pattern?
How could I knit the wrong row on the wrong side?
It is totally recognizable as to which side is which!
My poor, poor laceweight alpaca.
It made horrible noises when ripping it out, like matted hair being brushed.

I turned to my husband in my distraught and muttered, “I am above this.”

Maggie Smith as Thetis from "Clash of the Titans"

Maggie Smith as Thetis

Which in turn caused a conversation including Maggie Smith, as Thetis from Clash of the Titans, cursing me for being so vain. Vain for knitting something for myself and humbling me for doing so.

So that is when I decided it was time to start my Wooly Wormhead Mystery KAL. I will show her how vain I can be!

Started: Friday 11.13.09, brim work 1×1 rib
Yarn: handspun using FatCatKnits fiber, turned out lovely
Needles: Two US2 circulars purchased from Knitpicks
Size: working size Medium

Mystery 'A' in its early stages

Today I get to face the rain. I really wish I had rain boots. (okay boots ordered! these ones will be arriving soon!)

Snow keeps falling.

Big chunky flakes this time. Already caked vehicles. Have been strumming on the guitar all morning. Nothing has progressed. Some lyrics turned story-mode. Too many limbs to hang from. Need to make a crow girl sweater. The idea sparked as I came padding out and a murder flew like a mob of blackness, like a cloud about to downpour its burdens (hopefully in my case not of the bowels), cawing to one another and curving and swooping in unison. To me I wish I could have transformed and kicked my feet from the ground to join them, flying. What about a knitted totem poll?

I think it is about time to gather and discuss good things in life. There has been far too much grief and sorrow going around that it needs to have a quarantine. It is easier to focus on the bad and with that we are quickly blind-sighted from the good things that happen. We mostly remember dramatic instances of our life rather than the calm ones. I would like to focus more on the tranquil moments and calculate how abundant life is with them. You should try it as well. I am sure that it will lift off heavy burdens and make you smile. It sort of reminds me and, to be honest, is exactly like the scene with Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music singing “My Favorite Things”. Other terms could be move, inspire, entice, squee…your choice.

Warm jasmine tea served in a favorite mug, breathing deep and feeling the lungs resonate with life, cats dreaming while their whiskers flicker from time to time, watching snow fall from a window curled up safe and warm, studying bird behavior at the feeder, a good pair of cozy, hand knit socks, a book that lingers because it is too good to finish, nonsense words put together whose syllables roll of the tongue pleasantly, burying feet in sand, the weight of good paper as you turn pages, the aesthetics of holding chopsticks, practicing calligraphy with various vials of ink, scrolls tied up with ribbons, the mesmerizing quality of fire, listening to chipmunks playing in fall leaves, primal screams in wide open places and in long corridors that echo, a good trance beat to let the body go.

I am always curious about what things make people smile. I think you can begin to intimately know an individual with this question. What moves you?

Inspiration for knitting this week..

Also a new book was added to the kitchen…for I SO love to cook! Skinny Bitch in the Kitch, I am hoping to make some delicious vegan dishes! Woot!

While typing this post I couldn’t resist sketching up some quick poses of Kefir who was napping in the pink chair next to me. Sketches turned into paintings…this is the outcome.
